Time: 7:30 - 09.00 pm
Location: Kigali, Rwanda

Side event organized by Amref Health Africa / Kenya Country Office

To keep the girls protected from harmful practices and to generate evidence on the effectiveness and the sustainability of the intervention, a mobile app has been developed by Amref, Taroworks and Salesforce in 2021.

With this app Amrefis able to follow up girls who have been saved from FGM/C through the CL-ARP and the integrated approach. Girls are registered during ARP events and monitored through use of trained community health volunteers and teachers who administer questionnaires about their wellbeing, safety, and if they face any threats of female genital mutilation, forced marriages, teenage pregnancies school dropout or any other forms of abuse or rights violations. The app has a case management module where FGM/C, TP, CEFM and school drop out cases are reported. The reported cases are immediately shared with the established community structures for action. Girls are visited every six months and asked questions about their wellbeing.

The first check-ins were conducted in July 2022. So far 1732 check-ins have been realized. The bi-annual check in exercises will be conducted up to the girls 24th birthday following up on socio-economic aspects of their lives including career progression. By monitoring the girls, Amrefis able to track if they stay protected from FGM/C, are retained in school, are not married off and the many risks they face in protecting their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Girls identity in the central dashboard are anonymized to ensure utmost confidentiality of the data collected.

Data generated by this tool helps to provide evidence for advocacy to influence leaders and policymakers to act and for fund raising to support integrated approaches to end gender based violence.
