CSW67 NGO Forum - In-person parallel event: Digital Gender-Based Violence: How Technology has Affected LGBTIQ People’s Lives

Datum: 06-03-2023
Tijd: 10:30 AM-12:00 PM EST/16:30-18:00 CET
Locatie: CCUN 2nd floor, New York

The digital space presents LGBTIQ people with exciting opportunities and major challenges. Online technologies enable access to information and provide avenues for building queer and gender-diverse communities. At the same time, LGBTIQ populations are targeted for gender-based violence in digital spaces, often facing harassment, bullying, hate speech, and surveillance.

Online spaces have increased exposure to daily threats, including surveillance, harassment, cyberbullying, and hate speech, among other violations, by State and non-State actors. The use of new technologies has also reinforced existing social prejudices increasing discrimination and online harassment that also translate to offline violence.

In Digital Gender-Based Violence: How Technology Has Affected LGBTIQ People’s Lives, LGBTIQ civil society advocates, States, and other stakeholders, will address digital gender-based violence experienced by people of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions, and sex characteristics. Panelists will also explore solutions to forge safer and more inclusive technologies through a human rights framework.

Panelists:
  • Suelle Anglin (ILGA)
  • Nancy Kelly (Stonewall)
  • Latiyah Orneill (Association transgenres et droits)
  • Barbra Wangare (EATHAN)
