Exchange with cities on the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on women

EUROCITIES is bringing together cities with Commissioner for equality Helena Dalli and MEP and chair of the European Parliament committee of women's rights and gender equality Evelyn Regner. This city dialogue will focus on the impact of COVID-19 crisis on women.

 

Cities have long been at the forefront of working towards gender equal societies. Yet the pandemic has exacerbated gender inqualities and discrimination. While women represent the majority of key workers in essential services, they are frequently working in high-risk, low-paid jobs and precarious working conditions. At home, they have often shouldered additional burden linked to confinement including home-schooling of children, care and housework responsibilities. These processes aggravate prospects for the socio-economic equality of women and men during a pandemic that, in addition, has seen a worrying rise in domestic violence against women.
