Palestine has a long history in defending women’s rights. As such, many women rights organisation are active in the socio-economic, legal and political fields, such as access to justice, prevention of GBV, education, economic empowerment, labour rights etc. This has led to fundamental changes in the path to gender equality, with especially an increasing number of girls in education, including a high presence of young women at universities, a growing number of female professionals, and a rising community of empowered women active in political activism.

However, as in other parts of the world, these changes are met in Palestine with (rising ?) conservative voices strongly advocating against women’s rights. Legal reforms and conventions such as CEDAW are considered as negative influences from the West undermining Palestinian culture and families.

What do these particularly male voices actually reflect, what do they tell us about men’s (lost?) sense of manhood in an ongoing context of occupation, violence and humiliation?

Looking at gender from a relational concept by moving away from an exclusive women’s focus towards engaging boys and men as part of social change may entail promising perspectives for achieving gender justice in Palestine. What can we learn from these experiences and innovative approaches?

Join us on zoom on Tuesday May 9th, 2023, at 4pm (CET).

The webinar is organised by PAX in collaboration with Izz Aljabari (expert in positive masculinities working for Allianza por la Solidaridad/Action Aid in Palestine) Renske Hollants (author of the award-winning thesis "Male perception of CEDAW implementation: Palestinian civilian aversion in the settler colonial context) and Rachel Ploem (gender advisor and currently working for UNDP/PAPP). The webinar will present research on Palestinian males’ perspective on women’s rights, it will share experiences with gender transformative approaches with women and men, and it will give some deeper insights in the promises of the positive masculinities approach but also the challenges of working on masculinities.

The webinar will be held in English. Arabic translation will be provided
